The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) was formed in 1997, as the result of a merger of three engineering associations - the American Railway Bridge and Building Association (ARB&B), the American Railway Engineering Association (AREA) and the Roadmaster's and Maintenance of Way Association (RMWA), along with functions of the Communications and Signals Division of the Association of American Railroads (AAR). The rich history of the predecessor organizations with their over 100 years of service to the rail industry, has shaped the legacy of AREMA.
As AREMA approaches our 30th anniversary, we reflect on the progress while looking ahead. AREMA has evolved alongside the railway industry, adding education, training, opportunities for collaboration; all while continuing to provide Recommended Practices upon which provides a basis to which our railway infrastructure is constructed and maintained. The AREMA organization, as it is today, was built through the incredible dedication and support of our membership, and should neither be discounted nor taken for granted.
As AREMA prepares for the next 30 years, it has implemented Technical Committee structural changes to improve how it develops and delivers modern North American railway engineering content and education to the transportation industry. These changes will take effect in September 2026, with updates to the Recommended Practices rolling out through 2028.
All Members received an email on June 10, 2026, that described upcoming Technical Committee Structural Changes. Please see the Announcement and refer to your email for additional details.
